What is the Osaka Rainbow Parade?
The Osaka Rainbow Parade is one of the largest Pride events in the Kansai region, welcoming everyone—from members of the LGBTQ+ community to allies. Held every autumn, it features a parade, stage performances, and booths run by businesses and organizations, providing a lively space where a huge crowd of visitors and participants can freely connect.
This year was especially successful!
- Total visitors over two days: 64,000
- Parade participants: 3,700
Various organizations set up panel exhibits and advice booths, plus a food corner, all contributing to a warm and energetic atmosphere unique to Osaka. The stage performances included live shows by well-known artists and drag queens, creating an incredibly festive scene.
My Impressions as a First-Time Participant
Although it was my first time joining the Osaka Parade, I heard from friends that it was even more spirited than usual—and they weren’t kidding! The venue was filled with smiling faces and a cheerful mood throughout. Watching everyone walk together in rainbow-themed outfits was truly heartwarming.
What struck me most was how the event wasn’t just about “spreading awareness of LGBTQ+ issues,” but rather about creating a space where both LGBTQ+ folks and allies celebrate each other’s individuality side by side. Talking with so many people, I learned a lot and felt it was a really valuable experience.
Looking Ahead
With more of these parades and festivals held all over the country, I can feel that Japan’s understanding of diversity is gradually growing. Osaka Rainbow Parade is a shining example of that progress, and it seems to get bigger every year—so I expect even more people will take part in the future.
From this experience, I’ve become more motivated to deepen my own understanding of diversity. As an ally, I want to do what I can to help “put smiles on even more faces.” I encourage everyone to check out next year’s Osaka Rainbow Parade or any Pride events near you—you’ll be glad you did!
